The busy Vaillantlaan in Schilderswijk is becoming much greener. The municipality will plant trees, add green areas, and green the central reservation. The various side streets of Vaillantlaan will also be greened. The municipality is allocating 740,000 euros for the green transformation. The work will start this year.
Alderman Robert Barker (Public Space, Animal Welfare, and Environment): ‘We are busy greening the paved city. It is more pleasant to live in a green street. Green provides cooling, promotes biodiversity, and helps prevent waterlogging. Vaillantlaan was high on our wish list. The busy traffic artery has a lot of stones and little green and trees. That is why I am happy that we are now going to green the avenue.’
Alderman Nur Icar (SME, Work, and Participation) adds: ‘The Vaillantlaan is an important connecting road in Schilderswijk, where many people drive through every day. If we invest in the streetscape here, it will also have a positive impact on the entrepreneurs who are located on and around Vaillantlaan. And what I find very important is that the greening of Vaillantlaan is really a wish from the neighborhood.’
Green Business Card
When Vaillantlaan was widened in the 1990s, the original plan was to add more green. In practice, this never happened. Therefore, the municipality will now make the paved street significantly greener. Green areas with seating and trees will be added to Paletplein, and the roundabout at the beginning of Vaillantlaan will be greener. On the other side of the avenue, near the Put, climbing plants will be placed on the walls. In total, the area will receive 65 new trees.
Business Climate
The greening strengthens the business climate in this part of Schilderswijk. Vaillantlaan will become the green business card of the neighborhood where people like to come to shop or visit the hospitality industry. The greening of Vaillantlaan is part of the approach to make shopping streets in Schilderswijk and Transvaal more attractive.
Social cohesion is also strengthened by planting greenery and trees. By creating pleasant places to stay, people are encouraged to meet each other in an accessible way.
