Relocation Grant for Utrechters Downsizing Well Used – and Now Exhausted

The relocation grant by the Municipality of Utrecht, launched in September 2024, aimed to encourage residents with larger social housing to move to smaller homes. This initiative aimed to optimize the use of existing housing stock. The budget of €250,000 has been fully utilized, assisting about sixty households in relocating.

Alderman Dennis de Vries (Housing): “With the €250,000, we managed to help many people move into new homes. The grant facilitated the housing flow, allowing others to move into the vacated larger homes. Consequently, more people now live in appropriately sized housing.”

The Scheme

The relocation grant was a pilot project encouraging residents with larger homes to move to smaller, more suitable accommodations, thus freeing up space for larger families. The grant was €3,000, and €5,000 for those with a U-pass. Households with a minimum of four-room rental homes in Utrecht who moved to smaller social housing or senior housing in the Utrecht region were eligible. The funds could be used freely, whether for renting a moving van or buying new curtains.

Currently, the last grants are being paid out. As the budget is exhausted, new applications are not being accepted. There is currently no budget to continue the measure.
