Consumer Confidence Deteriorates Again

In January, consumer sentiment was more negative for the fourth consecutive month. The confidence level dropped to -28, compared to -26 in December. The outlook on the economic climate has particularly worsened. The recovery of consumer confidence, after its lowest point in October 2022, stalled throughout 2024. Consumers in January 2025 felt as negative as in January 2024.

With a score of -28, consumer confidence is below the average of the past twenty years (-10). It reached its highest level ever in January 2000 (36) and its lowest in September and October 2022 (-59). The CBS has been measuring consumer confidence monthly since April 1986 based on consumer sentiment surveys. This confidence is an average of five sub-questions, where the balance of positive and negative answers is considered. If all consumers are positive, the balance is 100; if all are negative, it is -100.

Consumers More Negative About Economic Climate

In January, consumers were more negative about the economy than in December. The economic climate indicator stood at -50, compared to -45 in December. Both the assessment of the economic situation over the past twelve months and the outlook for the next twelve months have worsened.

Also Negative Willingness to Buy

The willingness to buy stood at -14 in January, compared to -13 in December. The assessment of financial situations over the past twelve months and the outlook for the next twelve months also worsened. Consumers found the timing for making large purchases slightly less favorable than in December.
