In March, we will work on the asphalt on the Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg and in the tunnel tubes of the IJ tunnel for three weekends. Both tunnel tubes and the Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg between IJdoornlaan and the A10 will be closed. Traffic will be diverted via S115 and S117. During the three weekends, we will grind off the asphalt, refill it, and make it waterproof. In some areas, we will completely replace the asphalt. Additionally, we will refresh the markings and the asphalt will receive a new protective layer so that it lasts longer.
Planning and Closures
Note: during all three weekends, the IJ tunnel will be closed in both directions.
Below you can read which parts of the Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg are closed and when.
- Weekend 1: Friday, March 14, 11:59 PM to Monday, March 17, 6:00 AM. The Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg will be closed from the IJ tunnel to exit S117 (BovenIJ/ Nieuwendam/IJdoornlaan). The entrance from IJdoornlaan towards A10 will remain open.
- Extra closure: Thursday, March 20, 10:00 PM to Friday, March 21, 6:00 AM. The Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg will be closed from exit 16 (A10 Volendam/S116) to the exit towards IJdoornlaan. On Friday, March 21, the roadway will be open during the day.
- Weekend 2: Friday, March 21, 11:59 PM to Monday, March 24, 6:00 AM. The Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg will be closed from exit 16 (A10 Volendam/S116) to the IJ tunnel.
- Note: Friday, March 21, 10:00 PM to Saturday, March 22, 6:00 AM. Exit 16 of the A10 and the entrance towards Zeeburgertunnel from N247 are closed. Access to P+R Noord is also closed during this weekend.
- Weekend 3: Friday, March 28, 11:59 PM to Monday, March 31, 6:00 AM. IJ tunnel is closed. More information about the road works on Nieuwe Leeuwardenweg will follow at a later date.
Impact on Traffic
- The tunnel tubes and Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg between IJdoornlaan and A10 are closed. There is a detour via S115 and S117.
- P&R Noord is not accessible during weekend 2 and the night of Friday, March 21.
- Buses and metros are running and the ferries are sailing, but they may be busier.
- Emergency and rescue services maintain access.
- There is no hindrance for cyclists, scooters, and pedestrians.
Travel Tips and Discount on E-Scooters
- During the closures, people aged 18 and over can rent an e-scooter with a 50 percent discount via the NS app and via a QR code on ridecheck.app. The discount will be applied at the end of the ride.
- Park in a P+R parking space and travel further by public transport. Check the locations and availability at Availability P+R spaces.
- The GVB metro line 52 will continue to operate. The GVB ferries will also continue to sail.
- The EBS lines 305, 314, and 316 towards Waterland and Purmerend will be temporarily shortened and will run to Noord. Line 391 from Zaandam will not go further than Noorderpark. Travelers can use GVB metro line 52 between Noord-Noorderpark-Central Station and vice versa.
- Motorists can detour via the Coentunnel or the Zeeburgertunnel.
- Check current travel information via Google Maps, Waze, or Flitsmeister.
