Commute Distance Increased After Moving or Changing Jobs

The average commute distance for employees with a single job who moved or changed jobs in 2023 increased by 1.0 kilometers on average compared to the previous year. For employees who both moved and changed jobs, the increase was 0.4 kilometers, according to new research from CBS.

In 2023, the average commute distance for all jobs of employees was 19.9 kilometers. This is slightly more than in 2022 (19.8 kilometers). Employees who regularly work from home live, on average, further from their workplace compared to those who do not work from home regularly.

Most Additional Travel Kilometers Among Employees in Friesland

Employees with one job who moved in 2023 saw their average commute distance increase by 5.3% (1.0 kilometers) compared to the previous year. There are significant differences in commute distances between the Randstad and other provinces. On average, the commute distance increased the least for employees moving to or within Utrecht or South Holland. In contrast, moving to or within North Holland led to a decrease in commute distance by an average of 0.3 kilometers. Employees moving within or to Friesland experienced the largest increase in kilometers (7.4), followed by those moving within or to Drenthe and Zeeland.

In 2023, employees with a full-time job traveled an average of 23.9 kilometers from home to work. For part-time employees, this was 16.4 kilometers on average. Employees who switched from a full-time to a part-time job in 2023 started working 1.9 kilometers closer to home (from 25.2 to 23.3 kilometers). Conversely, part-time workers who switched to a full-time job had a larger commute distance on average: 5.1 kilometers (from 20.8 to 25.9 kilometers).
