A 20-year-old Amsterdammer faces a six-year prison sentence. The Public Prosecution Service claims he was involved in explosions in Amsterdam and Amstelveen in December 2023. He is also accused of stealing two scooters and possessing a homemade explosive.
The suspect was identified because his DNA was found on safety glasses discovered at the crime scene in Amsterdam-Osdorp. The DNA was located in places indicating the glasses were indeed used. The glasses were found near the suspected escape route. Video footage shows a person wearing similar safety glasses while igniting the explosive. During the explosion on December 24, 2023, nothing was stolen, but it caused significant damage, breaking several windows and other parts of the building.
Electronic Tag
The suspects DNA was also found on tape used in the explosion of an ATM on December 30, 2023, in Amstelveen. Again, nothing was stolen, but substantial damage occurred. The Public Prosecution Service finds it very unusual that DNA was found at both explosion sites in such a short period. In both instances, the suspect could not provide a plausible explanation. It is also notable, said the prosecutor, that the suspect was not at home during both explosions, as shown by the data from the electronic tag he wore.
Feeling of Insecurity
Amsterdam has been plagued by explosions for some time. These incidents not only threaten safety but also result from explosions related to robberies. The prosecutor stated, “In this case, there were not only shops but also residences near the ATM. It causes inconvenience, significant damage, and a great feeling of insecurity. Almost every day, you can read in the newspaper about the impact of this. It is concerning that an explosive was also found at the suspects home, putting the safety of others, including his mother and brother, at risk.”
Theft of Motorcycles
The Amsterdammer is also suspected of stealing two motorcycles. In one case, he admitted to the theft during the hearing. This involves a motorcycle stolen on February 3, 2024, in Amsterdam. For the theft of another motorcycle in November 2023, the Public Prosecution Service has evidence in a note found on the suspects phone.
The court will issue a ruling in two weeks.
