The Heinenoordtunnel, over 55 years old, had its joints inspected and found needing reinforcement. Renovations were undertaken to prolong their lifespan and ensure the tunnels waterproofing.
According to Arie Timmer, technical advisor at Rijkswaterstaat, this complex task involved learning new techniques applied in other projects.
The tunnel, a submerged design, required innovative solutions such as injecting wax to protect inaccessible areas. Mock-ups ensured practical execution without damaging the vital water seals.
Sharing knowledge through platforms like COB, the project sets a precedent for future tunnel renovations in South Holland.
