National Tile-Ripping Championship Kicks Off Again
Once again this year, Aalsmeer is participating in the National Tile-Ripping Championship. The goal is to replace as many tiles as possible with greenery. This helps make Aalsmeer greener and more resilient to increasingly severe weather. The National Tile-Ripping Championship runs until 31 October. Once a month, the ripped-up tiles can be collected free of charge by the Tile Service.
The weather in the Netherlands is becoming increasingly extreme. Heavy rain showers and longer periods of heat and drought are occurring more frequently. Our living environment is also heavily paved, leading to issues such as heat stress and waterlogging more often. It is therefore important to adapt our environment better to the changing climate. In other words: out with the tiles, in with the greenery!
Good for Well-Being
In over 200 municipalities, gardens are being made greener to prevent waterlogging, provide cooling during heatwaves, retain water during droughts, and expand living space for plants and animals. Moreover, a green living environment is beneficial for well-being.
Free Tile Service
All information about the National Tile-Ripping Championship can be found at www.aalsmeer.nl/tegelwippen. You can also register for the free tile service via the website. The tiles will then be collected free of charge on the designated collection days. This year, the following collection days have been set:
- Monday, 30 March
- Monday, 20 April
- Tuesday, 26 May
- Monday, 22 June
- Monday, 13 July
- Monday, 17 August
- Monday, 21 September
- Monday, 19 October
Registration is possible until Thursday before 4:00 PM, prior to the collection day. If there are many registrations, an additional collection day may be scheduled.
Replacing Tiles with Greenery
Only garden tiles will be collected, so no other (garden) waste. The tiles can be placed at the nearest street corner from 4:00 PM on the Saturday before the collection day until 7:30 AM on the collection day at the latest. The condition is that the tiles from the garden must be replaced with greenery.
