Amsterdam is exploring with our partners how we can improve the public transport connection between Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer. This is important because there are increasingly more travelers in the region. The current public transport network will not be able to handle that in the future. There are currently 5 solutions to expand and improve public transport in the region.
The metropolitan region is growing and will continue to grow in the coming decades. More businesses, commuters, tourists, and residents are coming. Public transport is already reaching its limits. To keep the entire region accessible, we need to expand public transport. It is important that housing, work, facilities, and accessibility remain well balanced. A real puzzle.
Effects far beyond the region
Better public transport between Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer has a positive effect throughout the Netherlands and even abroad. In particular, the Schiphol tunnel between Amsterdam and Hoofddorp is a bottleneck. If we improve public transport in the region, fewer regional trains will need to go through the tunnel. This will allow at least 8 extra trains per hour, per direction through the tunnel to the rest of the Netherlands. The travel time by train between Northern Netherlands and the Randstad will then be shorter, and more international trains can run.
5 Variants
In recent years, we have conducted extensive research together with partners: which lines should we build to improve the public transport connection between Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer? What solutions are there? Below are the 5 solutions we will now further investigate:
- Bus: BRT Network. New Bus Rapid Transit network with a main route that branches out to multiple destinations.
- Train: Airport Sprinter Plus. A new train connection via a long tunnel with regular Airport Sprinters between Amsterdam Central Station and Hoofddorp Station.
- Train: City Sprinter. A new, regular train connection via a short tunnel with City Sprinters between Amsterdam Central Station and Hoofddorp Station. This variant is between a regular train and a metro and stops more often along the way than the Airport Sprinter Plus.
- Metro to Schiphol. Extension of the North/South line to Schiphol, mostly above ground.
- Metro to Hoofddorp. Extension of the North/South line to Hoofddorp via a long underground metro tunnel.
What’s next?
To make the best choice, we will further study the 5 variants now. We will carefully examine the effects on accessibility of each of the variants. We will also look at whether we have the right techniques in house and what the (environmental) effects are on the surroundings and the economy. And what price tag is attached to the different scenarios. By the end of 2026, a definitive preference should be on the table.
