Year 8 Students from De Optimist Experience Adaptive Sports During (S)Cool on Wheels
On Thursday, March 19, 2026, Year 8 students from De Optimist primary school participated in the (S)Cool on Wheels clinic, organized by Borne Sport in collaboration with the Dutch Disability Sports Fund. Through the clinic, the organizers aim to show students that sports can be accessible to everyone and to foster greater understanding, respect, and awareness around living and participating in sports with a disability.
The clinic began with a classroom session, where students learned about life and sports with a disability. Following this, the students took part in activities in the Hooiberg gymnasium, where they, for example, tried sports in a wheelchair.
Johan Reekers, a former Paralympic athlete, and Henk Geert Wessels, who sustained a spinal cord injury at the age of fifteen and is active in handcycling and wheelchair basketball, shared their personal stories.
Through this clinic, the students gained insight into adaptive sports and saw firsthand that sports can be accessible to everyone.
