More funding for regions where offshore wind farm cables come ashore
The Dutch cabinet has once again made funds available for investments in the livability of regions where offshore wind farm cables come ashore. As one of five regions, Zeeland will receive €49 million this time from area investments from the Climate Fund and the European Commission’s Recovery and Resilience Facility. The municipality of Borsele will receive over €18.6 million of this amount. The agreement was signed on Monday, March 18.
The connection of offshore wind farms has an impact on land due to the construction of the necessary infrastructure. Therefore, the national government is working with other authorities to invest in the quality of life in the five regions, including Zeeland. As in the first tranche, the projects must contribute to the themes of preserving and strengthening nature, improving the living environment, boosting the regional economy, and accelerating the energy transition. It is also important that the results of the projects are visible and contribute to the well-being of residents.
Strengthening the living environment
In October 2025, the municipal council decided that the funds from the second tranche will be used for the development of the Sloe area, innovative housing forms, investments in cycling and walking routes, the Impact Fund, social resilience, freshwater supply, greening of industrial estates, and flower-rich field edges. Alderman Kees Weststrate: “The cables from offshore wind farms and related infrastructure run through our area. It is only natural that the proceeds also benefit our residents through investments in livability and the living environment.”
A future with sustainable energy
The Netherlands is in the midst of a transition from fossil energy to sustainable energy. Ultimately, the Netherlands aims to be climate-neutral by 2050. Thanks to the country’s favorable location, it is possible to generate a great deal of sustainable energy in the North Sea. The energy generated by the wind farms is transported ashore via cables, landing in North Netherlands (Eemshaven), Zeeland (Sloe area), Rotterdam (Maasvlakte), the North Sea Canal area, and around Moerdijk and Geertruidenberg. With area investments, the national government, together with the regions, aims to strengthen the living environment in these locations.
