Breda will officially receive the title of National Park City on May 20. This means international recognition as a city where nature and urban life go hand in hand. The title, awarded by the National Park City Foundation from London, underscores the commitment to a green and healthy living environment. With this, Breda joins world cities like London and Adelaide, which have already achieved this status.
National Park City is a global movement of people working towards more greenery and biodiversity in their city. The goal is to have at least 25 National Park Cities within a few years. Breda receives the title because residents, entrepreneurs, and the municipality have long been working intensively together to make the city greener, healthier, and more natural.
The appointment is a milestone for the city and its residents. “This title is a recognition for the many residents, entrepreneurs, and organizations that are committed to greening Breda and an inspiration to continue doing so,” says Joost Barendrecht, chairman of the foundation Breda City in a Park. “It is primarily an incentive to get more residents excited about working with greenery. It doesnt always have to be very big. Even a small front garden contributes beautifully. Together we ensure that Breda continues to thrive as a city where nature and people strengthen each other.”
Green Happiness
Councilor Peter Bakker (climate and nature development) emphasizes the importance of this recognition: “Green is not only beautiful, but also necessary for a healthy and livable city. The effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible. This title motivates us to continue greening together with the city. It is a wonderful recognition of what has already been achieved, but especially an incentive to continue. So that Breda remains a pleasant place for both people and animals in the future.”
