Work begins on Brunssum lifestyle park
Provincial deputy Michael Theuns of Limburg Province and Brunssum municipal councillor Jaimy van Dijk unveiled two images of the lifestyle park alongside the project initiators Kelvin and Guiliano, and youth worker Omar Nouri of CMWW. The work has now officially begun, and the first outlines of the park are already visible.

The lifestyle park will be a versatile and inclusive space for all ages, offering plenty of opportunities for physical activity as well as social interaction. The park will feature various amenities, including natural play areas, a pétanque court, a basketball court, a football pitch, and of course, a skate park. Livability, health, safety, and community are central to the design, giving the park an important social and recreational function.
Young skaters and local residents
A group of young skaters wanted to renovate and revitalise their skate park. With the help of youth worker Omar Nouri, they entered into discussions with the municipality, where their bigger ambitions emerged. What if the space could offer something for everyone, not just skaters? Together with the municipality, they engaged with the local community and later with local businesses and social institutions, all of whom saw new opportunities in the site. This collaboration led to the plan for a lifestyle park.
Councillor Jaimy van Dijk said: “I am incredibly proud of these young people from Brunssum who not only had an eye for their own needs—a new skate park—but also for others. They have worked hard to create something new in the town centre that offers young and old the chance to stay active and healthy. Another great advantage is that it will become a wonderful meeting place—not just for local residents, but for all Brunssumers. A real contribution to the quality of life here!”
Provincial deputy Michael Theuns added: “What’s so great about this lifestyle park is that the idea came directly from the young people of Brunssum. They know better than anyone what’s needed to keep this place vibrant and attractive now and in the future. By working together with the municipality, the Province, local organisations, and residents, we’ve created a meeting place for young and old. As the Province of Limburg, we are more than happy to fully support such a powerful community initiative.”
