Water Authority Vallei en Veluwe has found blue-green algae in the pond between Ruttenbeeklaan and Tepelenburgweg in Harskamp. The blue-green algae form a thin floating layer on the water. Blue-green algae are caused by so-called cyanobacteria that grow towards the light in stagnant water rich in nutrients. You can recognize blue-green algae in the water because there is a green-blue haze in the water. Municipality of Ede places warning signs.
Danger to public health
People who come into contact with the water can develop skin rashes and gastrointestinal problems. This can happen when swallowing water or if one comes into contact with the blue-green algae through the skin or eyes. For people who still come into contact with the water, it is sufficient to shower well afterwards. Small children are more vulnerable because they often ingest relatively more water than adults. Animals that drink the water can become seriously ill or even die. If dogs become ill, it is advisable to inform the veterinarian that the animal has been in contact with blue-green algae.
Warning signs
The municipality has placed warning signs at the pond where the blue-green algae have been found. This can be dangerous for people and animals:
- Avoid contact with the water: water with blue-green algae is unsuitable for swimming, and boating and fishing are also strongly discouraged by the water authority and municipality.
- Watch your dog. Do not let your dog swim in or drink from the water.
