The redesign of the city center is progressing steadily. The council has approved the design for the new layout and greening of Vrijstraat, Marktstraat, Nieuwstraat, and Hermanus Boexstraat. Work will start in early 2026, once Demer, Rechtestraat, and Hooghuisstraat are completed.
Councilor Rik Thijs: “Great that we are taking the next step towards making our city center more attractive and greener. This way, we are working towards a climate-resilient, green, and healthy environment where everyone enjoys being. Soon we will also start with the sketch design for the Market, the final phase of the redesign. For this, we have chosen the agency OMGEVING. The Market is an important square for our city center, where people like to gather. Together with stakeholders, we will look at how we want to design the square.”
Layout
Just like the previously renovated streets in the city center, Vrijstraat, Marktstraat, Nieuwstraat, and Hermanus Boexstraat will have a sidewalk-street-sidewalk layout. With the same Eindhoven stone in the sidewalks and gray-brown baked bricks in the middle. With natural stone bands and line drains in between. Eight new benches, ten trash bins, and new lighting will be installed in the streets.
More Green and Water Management
In addition to adjusting the layout and the outdated paving, a lot of greenery will be added to the streets. Trees and green areas will be placed in the sidewalks; the street area will remain free. Consideration will also be given to terrace facilities, pedestrian flows, and accessibility. Across the streets, 18 new trees and approximately 700 m2 of planting areas will be added. The 14 trees in Hermanus Boexstraat and Nieuwstraat will remain standing.
Adjustments will also take place underground. The old sewage system will be replaced by a climate-adaptive water system with water retention and separate sewage. This retention will hold rainwater and provide trees and plants with water.
