The NME building in the Haarlemmer Kweektuin is being renewed in a sustainable way. Work started in early March. This project demonstrates how we approach demolition and construction differently.

During the demolition of the NME building, we assess which materials can be reused for the renewed building or in another project. Reusing materials reduces waste and carbon dioxide emissions. It also decreases the use of new raw materials.

What we will do

The ground floor will become a visitor center. It will be the place where residents of Haarlem can find inspiration and ask questions about making the city more sustainable and greener. Topics include greening and nature, reuse of materials, waste, and the transition to energy sources other than gas.

The building will be made as much as possible with natural materials and there will be plenty of space for greenery. We expect the renewed building to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.

Festive start

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the start of work on the NME building was celebrated together with aldermen Robbert Berkhout and Eva de Raadt. They helped the children present build a marble run from leftover materials.

More projects

In other construction and demolition projects, we also look at how to reuse as many materials as possible. This fits within agreements signed in November 2025 together with other municipalities and parties in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (MRA).
