Column by Mayor Dirk Heijkoop: Election pain or…?
Today, the ballot box is ready for you at the polling station in your neighborhood. Do you already know who you’re going to vote for? Or do you feel a figurative pang of election pain at the thought of having to choose a party or candidate?
And have you also realized that this election pain stems from the fact that we have free elections? The luxury we enjoy of casting our vote freely is a great good.
On Monday, I gave my first guest lecture on “81 years of freedom in Hardinxveld-Giessendam.” With the students, we recalled memories of five years of occupation in the Netherlands and discussed all the consequences we still commemorate annually. Through all media, you can see how global peace and freedom are under immense pressure: people who do not live in freedom and cannot choose their own representatives.
In the Netherlands, in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, this is happily possible. That’s why I celebrate every election day as “The festival of democracy.” And that’s why I repeat the call: cast your vote! The polling stations are open until 9:00 PM tonight. You are warmly welcome at the results evening at restaurant Kampanje at 8:30 PM.
Once the results are known, the political parties will enter into discussions under the guidance of an informateur. Together, they will select someone to investigate how the municipality will be governed over the next four years. I don’t feel any election pain about that, but I have full confidence that Hardinxveld-Giessendam is heading toward a flourishing future.
Mayor Dirk Heijkoop
