Signing of Cultural House gives impetus to vibrant cultural heart of Heerenveen
On Saturday, March 14, the parties signed the cooperation agreement for the Cultural House in Heerenveen. With this step, they confirm their joint ambition to create an accessible and inspiring place in and around the Heerenveen School where culture, meeting, and experience come together. It is an important follow-up step to the council decision of June 19, 2025, in which the development of a Cultural House in the heart of Heerenveen was chosen.
The signatories are Ateliers Majeur, Museum Heerenveen, and the municipality of Heerenveen as formal contracting parties, together with Stichting Historie Heerenveen, Museum Belvédère, the Posthuis Theater, the Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis Fonds, and Westerhof/Kerkhof as cooperation partners. Together, they lay the foundation for the place where the cultural offering of Heerenveen will come together in the future.
A place that brings people together
The Cultural House will be the place where art, culture, heritage, and history come together, and where residents and visitors can easily walk in to discover, learn, or participate. The Heerenveen School will form the heart of this place. Ateliers Majeur will move all its activities to this monumental building, and Museum Heerenveen will also find a new, future-proof location here. By working together under one roof, mutual connections are strengthened, and the cultural offering for residents becomes more visible and accessible.
Alderman Hedwich Rinkes emphasizes how important this step is: “The beauty of today is that we are not only putting our signature to something, but we are taking a joint step forward. In the Cultural House, a place is created where you can enter to experience or learn something. We confirm that we are doing this together and make culture visible, close, and accessible to everyone. Our center becomes stronger and our society more cohesive because of this.”
Recognizable place in the center
The Cultural House is part of the broader renewal of the center. Soon, the Cultural House, the new town hall, and the Heerenveen Library will be close to each other, creating one recognizable and accessible place for culture, meeting, and activities. This fits with the wish of the residents: during the G1000 Heerenveen, they clearly indicated a need for one central place where culture comes together and where there is space to meet each other and experience something.
Moving forward together
With the signing of the cooperation agreement, the partners confirm their joint direction and express their intention to continue building the Cultural House in good cooperation. This creates a solid basis for the continuation of the process.
Opening of the Cultural House
If everything goes according to plan, the Cultural House will open its doors to residents and visitors at the end of 2028 or the beginning of 2029.
