Temporary bridge over the Westfriesche Sluis to be replaced by the end of 2027
The temporary bridge over the Westfriesche Sluis in Kolhorn will be replaced by the end of 2027. We have started preparations for a new permanent and removable bridge. This was necessary because the movable bridge could no longer close in 2012, creating an unsafe traffic situation. A temporary bridge was therefore installed at the time.
The Westfriesche Sluisbrug connects the Groetweg from the Schagerweg in the north to the Kolhornerweg and the Alkmaarseweg in the south. To keep the road accessible, an emergency bridge was installed over the existing bridge at the time.
Collaboration between province and municipality
We are working with the Province of North Holland on a new, safe, and future-proof bridge. The province is the owner and manager of the Westfriesche Sluis and is responsible for smooth and safe navigation on this provincial waterway. That is why we are coordinating the design and construction of the new bridge with the province.
The province has planned the replacement of the lock for 2033 and will continue to monitor the condition of the lock until then. We are replacing the temporary bridge earlier so that traffic safety at this location can be improved in the short term. The design will also take into account the function of the lock and the waterway.
We have been looking for a good solution together with the province for some time. That is why I am pleased that we can now really move forward. The temporary bridge has held up for a long time, but it was high time for something permanent. I appreciate that we can realize this together with the province.
