Construction of new Leidschendam library begins
With a sledgehammer, Alderman Marcel Belt and Gerard Hendriks, director of Bibliotheek aan de Vliet, officially launched the construction work for the new library location in Leidschendam on Thursday, March 12. Together with library staff, the architect, and the contractor, they visited the building at Fluitpolderplein, where the sledgehammer will first demolish the existing structure before work can begin on a vibrant new library.
Alderman Marcel Belt: "The new library location will be more than just a building for books. We are creating a living room where everyone feels at home. There will also be study spaces, a coffee and sandwich bar, an open stage, a tech area, and a cooking island. In short, a bustling place where people can meet, do things together, and develop themselves."
Work schedule
First, the current building will be demolished, followed by the renovation. The contractor is expected to complete this work by the fourth quarter of 2026. After the structural handover, work will begin on the interior. The interior design is nearly finalized. Next, a tender will be issued for an interior contractor to fit out the building. At the same time, the building next to the new library at Fluitpolderplein 10 will be renovated and prepared for rental to social organizations that collaborate with the library. The municipality is exploring which organizations can use this space.
A place for and by the community
Both the contractor and Bibliotheek aan de Vliet aim to involve the neighborhood closely during the renovation. Throughout the renovation year, activities will be organized for residents and interested parties.
Director Gerard Hendriks of Bibliotheek aan de Vliet: "We are building this location not only for the neighborhood but also with the neighborhood. Many residents were involved in creating the plans. And during the construction, we will continue to stay in touch with the community, together with the contractor, to make this new building a lively place."
Opening in 2027
The library will remain accessible for now at its current location on Fluitpolderplein 5. The new location will only close for a few weeks during the move. If the work proceeds according to schedule, the renovated library will open its doors at Fluitpolderplein 12 by early 2027 at the latest.
