Fast cycling connection in Lochem to be developed
Work begins on the redesign of Albert Hahnweg and De Gloep on March 16. On Monday, March 16, contractor Wegenbouw Lansink will start the redesign of Albert Hahnweg and De Gloep in Lochem. These streets will be transformed into a cycling street, a first for the municipality of Lochem. The contractor will also replace the sewer system. The work will be carried out in phases, meaning the contractor will work on short sections at a time. The first shovel will go into the ground near the fire station. The work is expected to be completed in May 2027.
The project covers the section from De Gloep, Albert Hahnweg to the intersection with Enkweg. The ultimate goal is to create a high-quality cycling route between the train station, the city center, and Staring College. The Mobility Plan 2022-2030 and the subsequent Cycling Plan 2024-2035, both adopted by the council, emphasize cycling as a sustainable, clean, and healthy mode of transport. One of the measures mentioned in these plans is the realization of this cycling route.
Residents contributed to the design
Residents had the opportunity to provide input on the design. The municipality held several information meetings. The focus on cycling, speed-reducing measures, the addition of greenery, and improvements to sidewalks and parking facilities give the cycling route a distinctive character.
Why isn’t the entire cycling connection being tackled at once?
The municipality is not addressing the entire cycling connection in one go. Albert Hahnweg is in need of maintenance at many points, and the sewer system is outdated. Therefore, the municipality does not want to delay the work on this section of Albert Hahnweg any longer and will combine it with the sewer replacement.
Most western and eastern sections of the total cycling connection still to follow
A further design for the final western section, from the Enkweg intersection to Staring College, will be developed later. The municipality will present these plans to residents for feedback. Preparations have begun for the most eastern section (Lochem train station – Molenpoort – Oosterwal), which is part of the broader project to redesign the Graaf Ottoweg, Oosterwal, Smeepoort, and Nieuwstad areas.
Work begins with unveiling of construction sign
On Monday, March 16, at 2:00 PM, Alderman Michiel Rijsberman and Martine Kleizen, director of Lansink, will unveil the construction sign for the work on Albert Hahnweg and De Gloep. The sign will be placed near the intersection of Albert Hahnweg and Henri Dunantweg. Interested parties are welcome to attend. Plus Mensink will provide coffee and soft drinks.
More information and detours
Detour routes for cars and cyclists will be indicated on-site with yellow signs. Shops such as Plus Mensink and Gabriël, as well as the veterinary clinic, will remain accessible. Since the work is being carried out in phases, the detour routes are often short. The municipality and the contractor are doing everything possible to minimize inconvenience and keep local residents informed, for example, if parking is temporarily unavailable in front of their homes.
