Municipality of Maassluis receives subsidy for Area Investments Offshore Grids
The Municipality of Maassluis has received €2.97 million from the Dutch government to invest in its living environment, regional economy, and the energy transition. The subsidy is part of the second round of Area Investments Offshore Grids, for which an administrative agreement was signed by the national government, the Province of South Holland, and regional partners. These investments serve as compensation for the impact of offshore wind farms on the living environment. Alderman Sjoerd Kuiper signed the subsidy award on behalf of Maassluis in The Hague.
Greening and improving living environment
With the allocation of the subsidy, the Municipality of Maassluis aims to allow the city to grow in balance by greening the main arteries (Laan 1940-1945/Industrieweg and Rozenlaan/Westlandseweg). In addition, the municipality intends to improve the public space around Station Centrum and Kapelpolder by, among other things, contributing to high-quality parking solutions. This will enhance the quality of the environment. With more greenery and trees, these areas will become more attractive.
Alderman Sjoerd Kuiper, responsible for urban development, adds: “We are grateful for these additional financial resources, which allow us to invest in measures that provide extra quality. Maassluis did not have its own budget for this in the short term. In this way, we are promoting greenery, nature, a healthy environment with opportunities for social interaction, and we can continue working on a pleasant city.”
Purpose of the area investments
In November 2024, the Dutch government announced the second phase of the Area Investments Offshore Grids. The aim of the area investments is to improve the quality of life in the vicinity of landing sites. Landing sites are locations on the coast where cables or pipelines from the sea are connected to the land.
The area investments are intended as a boost for the region. The projects must contribute to the preservation and enhancement of nature, improving the living environment, strengthening the regional economy, and accelerating the energy transition.
Exploration in a next phase
In the first phase after the subsidy award, the Municipality of Maassluis, in collaboration with partners, will explore the possibilities and develop case studies.
