From March 21 to October 31, 2025, the entire Netherlands will compete in the National Tile Removal Championship for the national title. Everyone in a participating municipality can join by replacing tiles with greenery. The National Tile Removal Championship calls on residents to remove a few square meters of tiles in their front, back, or facade gardens and to fill the freed space with flowers, plants, or shrubs.
In Limburg, 12 municipalities are joining forces this year to remove as many tiles as possible together. Unique in the Netherlands, as no other province has municipalities collaborating in this initiative.
Fewer tiles, more greenery
By doing this together, a greater impact is possible. The fewer the tiles, the more greenery. This is much better for biodiversity, water drainage, and combating heat stress. By concentrating these activities in the National Tile Removal Championship, participants can make their own municipality the National Champion of tile removal!
Alderman Hubert Mackus: “Every tile removed helps to make the city greener, more attractive, and healthier. More greenery makes our city cooler and helps to catch rain when it pours. This year we challenge all residents of Maastricht again to participate, so that together we can make an even greater impact.”
