Dutch Lower House requests cabinet to involve Nijkerk fully in area process for new Defence barracks
Members of the Dutch Lower House on Tuesday afternoon adopted a motion calling on the government to involve the municipality of Nijkerk as a full and direct partner in the establishment of the central Defence barracks in Zeewolde.
The MPs Mirjam Bikker (CU), Diederik van Dijk (SGP) and Peter de Groot (VVD) submitted the motion, requesting the government to include Nijkerk in the area process. They also asked the government to provide insight into the impact of the Defence plans on (at least) mobility and housing construction. A majority of Lower House members supported the motion on Tuesday afternoon.
National Programme Space for Defence
The construction of the new barracks in Zeewolde for over 7,000 Defence personnel is one of many Defence plans included in the National Programme Space for Defence, a decision on which was taken four months ago. In early September last year, then State Secretary for Defence Gijs Tuinman already pledged to involve the municipality of Nijkerk actively in the administrative consultations on the new central barracks in Zeewolde.
Proper integration of the Netherlands' largest barracks
Nijkerk alderwoman Esther Heutink-Wenderich welcomes the broad support from Lower House members for the motion. “We are working constructively with Defence, the municipality of Zeewolde and the provinces involved to ensure the proper integration of the Netherlands' largest barracks,” said alderwoman Heutink-Wenderich.
In September last year, several Lower House members visited the future Defence site in Zeewolde, located a short distance from the Nijkerk Bridge.
