Discover Nijmegen's present and past in the 10-part podcast: Noviomagus to Nimma
Have you ever wondered where the nickname Havana aan de Waal comes from, why we celebrate carnival in Nijmegen, or when the old city walls disappeared? Listen to Noviomagus to Nimma and dive with us into new stories about the oldest city in the Netherlands.
In ten episodes, public historian Koen Terheijden takes you through the history of Nijmegen, searching for the origin of our traditions, customs, streets, and buildings. He doesn't do this alone: in each episode, he talks with two special guests about everyday themes and bridges the past with the present. For example, university historian Jan Brabers talks with Carla Schouwenaars from the action group Dolle Nimma, and sports historian Jan Bant speaks with active cyclist and manager Joost van Wijngaarden. In the episode about migration, Sinan Can and university lecturer David de Boer have their say. Besides these guests, you'll also hear a number of Nijmegen residents each episode, who answer questions about themselves and their city while out on the street. This way, the episodes are not only about then, but also about now.
Discover stories about the first Antillean players at NEC, a peculiar French siege, and a notorious 18th-century crime of passion. After listening to the episodes about art and architecture, look at the Waalpaintings and the reconstruction buildings with a new perspective, and reflect on the past at the Grote Markt after hearing eyewitness accounts of the bombing on February 22, 1944.
Noviomagus to Nimma, the podcast by the Regional Archive Nijmegen, the House of Nijmegen History, and the course 'Know your city,' is available to listen to starting March 13. The first two episodes are about love and about sports.
