Column: The Future of Oldebroek
Read the column from 17 March 2026 here.
Tomorrow is the day: the municipal elections! For some residents, it’s a familiar ritual. For others, it’s exciting and new. Young people who have just turned 18 will vote for the first time. And there are residents who have voted in national elections before but are casting their ballot in the municipal elections for the first time. A small moment, but one that makes a huge difference for the future of our municipality.
Yet turnout in municipal elections is often lower than in national elections. I find that striking. Because it’s precisely here that the issues are close to home: the roads we drive on, the schools our children attend, the sports and care facilities in our villages, and the way we live together. Tomorrow, it’s about choices that have a direct impact on today and the future. This is your chance to help decide the future of our municipality. For yourself, your children, and your grandchildren.
Voting can also be fun (yes, really!). Tomorrow afternoon from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, the mobile polling station and LOCO’s music caravan will be set up at Meidoornplein in Wezep (on the side of the Expert). Here, you can not only cast your vote but also request a song number from our local radio station. Those who vote can take a photo with the special photo frame and share it on social media with #TheVoiceOfOldebroek. The requested songs will form the Spotify playlist ‘The Voice of Oldebroek’. I’ll be opening the polling station at 1:30 PM and requesting the first song. I’m very curious to hear which songs we’ll all get to enjoy—and of course, I hope to see you there!
Voting, however, is not self-evident for everyone. For people with (visual) disabilities, it can be a challenge. That’s why a sensory-friendly polling station with extra facilities, such as a tactile voting template and a ballot box, has been set up in De Kamphall in Wezep. This way, everyone can cast their vote independently and fully.
Perhaps politics sometimes feels far away. But locally, it’s close at hand. Every vote helps determine the choices made here—in your street, in your neighbourhood, and in your village.
So whether you already know exactly where your preference lies or you’ll take another look at the candidate list tomorrow: use your right to vote. It’s a small moment that can make a big difference. Voting is not just your right; it’s your chance to truly make a difference for yourself and our community.
I’m counting on you!
Tanja Haseloop – Mayor of Oldebroek
