Exhibition of Christiaan Starke in town hall
From this week, an exhibition featuring pen drawings by Christiaan Starke can be admired in the lobby of the Pekela town hall. The 74-year-old Starke was born in Oude Pekela, grew up in Nieuwe Pekela, and currently lives in Veendam.
He began creating art last year at the urging of his brother and hasn’t stopped since. The 74-year-old artist has now produced 63 black-and-white drawings in the style of Maurits Escher.
For the circles in his drawings, Starke does not use a compass because it damages the paper. “I take my grandmother’s porcelain dishes from the cabinet and use the bottoms of cups and saucers as the circumference of the circles. Without my grandmother’s dishes, there would be no drawings...”
The exhibition can be viewed until July 5 during the town hall’s opening hours at Raadhuislaan in Oude Pekela.
