Recount at party level in Roermond municipality
The Central Electoral Board (CSB) of the municipality of Roermond has decided to recount the votes from the municipal council elections at the party level. This decision was made in response to a request from the CDA for a recount. The difference in the number of votes between the VVD and the CDA is very small and this affects the distribution of the remaining seats. Every vote counts in Roermond. For this reason, the CSB finds it appropriate to honor this request, even though there is no formal basis for it under the Electoral Act.
The Central Electoral Board received the CDA’s request for a recount last Friday. Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24, the votes will be recounted at the party level. Residents can still submit a request for a recount until tomorrow at 11:00 AM. New requests will be reassessed by the CSB.
Assessment of the recount request
The CDA’s request was carefully assessed against the legal framework of the Electoral Act. The Electoral Act only mandates a recount if there are concrete indications that the counting process was incorrect. Such indications have not been established. Despite the fact that the Electoral Act does not consider the small difference and the additional seat a valid reason for a recount, the CSB has decided otherwise. The Electoral Act also allows for this in the case of municipal council elections.
Mayor Yolanda Hoogtanders: “A strong democracy is a great asset, and we work hard on that in Roermond. A widely supported outcome of the elections is important for voter confidence and a good start for the new council.”
A public recount
Tomorrow’s recount will begin at 9:00 AM. This recount is an official session of the Municipal Electoral Board and is open to the public. The recount will take place at the City Office on Kazerneplein. If you wish to attend, you can register at the reception desk of the City Office.
On Thursday, March 26, at 11:00 AM, there will be another session of the Central Electoral Board. During this session, the official final election results will be announced.
