Intent agreement for Spoorzone Zuid Roermond marks important step in area development

On Thursday 12 March, the signing of the intent agreement for the area development of Spoorzone Zuid Roermond took place. This marks an important milestone in the further planning of the area. Those present included representatives from the Municipality of Roermond, Waterschap Limburg, housing corporation Nester, housing corporation Wonen Zuid and project developer JPO.

As an elaboration of the 2024 ambition document Limburg Centraal, Spoorzone Zuid is a strategically important area within the spatial and mobility developments of the Municipality of Roermond.

Great potential

According to the Area Profile Spoorzone Roermond, this part of the Spoorzone has great potential for living, working, quality of life, travel, meeting and recreation. In addition, the development of Spoorzone Zuid aligns with the Municipality of Roermond's Environmental Vision: alongside an attractive living environment, good connections with surrounding cities are essential. Public transport is particularly important in this regard. The station area will be further transformed into a regional transport hub with space for various functions and facilities.

Important collaboration between partners

With the signing of the intent agreement, the partners are taking a joint step towards a future-proof, sustainable and attractive living environment for current and future residents. The redevelopment is a multi-year process in which the municipality creates opportunities to prepare the area for the future.

In October 2025, the Executive Board presented the Area Profile Spoorzone to the Municipal Council and it was unanimously adopted. Today's signing marks an important step towards the future of Roermond. Together with our partners, we are creating opportunities for a liveable, sustainable and attractive urban environment. It is wonderful to see how this collaboration is strengthening and how we are jointly working on an area that future generations will benefit from.”

Marc Breugelmans, Member of the Board of Waterschap Limburg: “It is great that Waterschap Limburg can contribute to a development that is very important for our home town of Roermond. Spoorzone Zuid offers an excellent opportunity to put ‘Living with water’ into practice and to show how you can integrate many aspects of water and water use into the design of a modern city. Think of encouraging less use of drinking water, managing wastewater and combating heat stress. We will work this out together in Spoorzone Zuid and as an important player in this city district, we will contribute our share.”

Next steps

In the coming period, the partners will continue to work on the planning and further elaboration of the area development. We expect to be able to share our plans before the summer.
