Improvements have been made, but there are still concerns about safety in Greater IJsselmonde. This became evident during a residents meeting in the neighborhood on June 17. The meeting was prompted by the shooting incidents nearly six months ago.
At the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, 3 people died in shooting incidents on the streets of IJsselmonde. This has left a deep impression on the residents. Since then, there have been resident evenings and assessments. During these, residents, together with the mayor, municipal staff, neighborhood partners, and the police, went into the neighborhood to show where they felt unsafe and what could be improved.
There was also a separate youth meeting on May 27, where young people could ask questions and share their concerns and ideas.
The municipality then began working on the action points that emerged from this. Such as improving lighting, trimming bushes, and increasing street supervision.
Meeting with the mayor
During the meeting on June 17, a review was conducted of what has been done so far. Residents, the mayor, neighborhood council members, housing corporations, the police, the neighborhood network, and municipal staff gathered together. Personal cards made by students from the Prins Willem-Alexanderschool were also distributed to residents.
Appreciation and concerns
The general sentiment among residents was positive. They appreciate the visible actions in the neighborhood and the collaborative approach. At the same time, concerns and frustrations were expressed about issues that have not yet been addressed or are taking too long. These signals are taken seriously by the involved parties and will be included in the follow-up.
Residents influence
Because although improvements have already been made, it also became clear that much more needs to be done. The meeting fits within the broader approach of Wijk aan Zet, where residents actively think along and have an influence on their living environment. Safety and livability remain themes that require ongoing attention, even after this intensive process.
It remains important for residents to report any issues in the neighborhood that could be improved. You can report this to the neighborhood networkers, via the MeldR app, www.rotterdam.nl/meldr or by calling 14 010.
