Portlantis, the new experience center about the port, was opened by Mayor Carola Schouten. Starting Saturday, March 22, everyone can explore the port themselves in the new building at Maasvlakte 2; Portlantis then opens to the public.
After the Rotterdam mayor, together with local students, hoisted the Portlantis flag next to the building, the official opening followed in the buildings atrium. There, she, along with three people who work in the port daily, placed their hands on a large model, which then lit up to reveal the image of the Port of Rotterdam.
By removing a large curtain, the impressive 22-meter-high atrium became visible, featuring moving life-size port symbols. The mayor then received a tour of the striking building. It was designed by a team led by Winy Maas of the architectural firm MVRDV, known for some of Rotterdams newest icons: the Markthal and Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.
Alderman Robert Simons (including Port and Economy) is pleased with the opening: ‘The Port of Rotterdam is a major engine behind our economy. Portlantis showcases in an inspiring way how valuable this sector is for our city, region, and all of the Netherlands.’
Discover and Experience
Whether you have been to the port before or are visiting for the first time, the interactive building is the place where you can discover and experience the Port of Rotterdam. Portlantis tells about the current port and the port of the future, using various storytelling forms, such as virtual reality, exhibitions with large 3D models, and laboratories for chemical and technical experiments.
EIC Mainport Rotterdam has also moved to the brand new building on Maasvlakte 2. The center organizes excursions and other activities to educate students about the port.
