Agreement signed for former school site on Leyenbroekerweg
The municipality of Sittard-Geleen has taken an important step in the development of the Agneten area in the centre of Sittard. The sale and development agreement for the site on Leyenbroekerweg has been signed by Alderman Leon Geilen and Jorrit Starmans, Director of Mulleners Vastgoed.
This paves the way for the development of 25 age-in-place owner-occupied apartments. In the coming period, the developer will further elaborate the plans. Permit applications can then be submitted by the end of the year, with construction starting in 2027.
New homes in a historic area
Space is now being cleared on the site of the former Agnes School for new apartments. After the demolition of the former school and gymnasium on Leyenbroekerweg and the adjacent residential buildings, 25 age-in-place owner-occupied apartments will be built. Each apartment will have access to a storage space and private parking. The site will also be landscaped as a garden. Notably, a (public) footpath will be created, providing a clear view and a direct link from Leyenbroekerweg (via Kloostertuin) to the city centre.
This footpath will be publicly accessible from sunrise to sunset. Leon Geilen: “There is a high demand for housing, which is why we ensure plenty of construction can take place in our municipality. However, it remains crucial that the right homes are built in the right places. The demand for age-in-place homes currently exceeds supply. With this construction project, 25 additional homes in this segment will become available, while the area is also made more attractive.”
The new-build plan for the apartments is part of the redevelopment of the Agneten area in the city centre. Homes will also be realised in the former monastery and surrounding locations, including the reuse of the monumental monastery building. This will give the area a new future.
Kloostertuin to serve a public function
The historic Kloostertuin will also be given a new role. The garden will be transformed into a green meeting place where residents can walk, relax and meet each other. This will create a peaceful and green spot in the heart of the city. The design takes into account the history of the site and the wishes of local residents.
