Repair work on Baanhoek Bridge cycle path on 21 March
On Saturday 21 March, contractor CMCP/Hollandia, acting on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat, will carry out repair work on the structure of the cycle path on the Baanhoek Bridge. The contractor will be working between midnight and 23:00 on Saturday.
The cycle path will remain open, but during the repair work, the cycle path will be narrowed at the location of the works on the bridge. The passage will remain 1.4 metres wide. This is the same as the measures that were implemented on the cycle path last week. Traffic controllers will guide cyclists, pedestrians and moped riders past the works.
Works
During the repair work, the contractor will replace parts of the steelwork of the supports for the cycle bridge. The work will be carried out on the part of the cycle bridge that is attached to the moving section of the railway bridge. The damaged parts of the supports will be cut away using a torch. New steel plates will then be welded on and secured with bolts. At the same time, a crack in the structure will also be welded shut. The contractor will be working, among other things, from a pontoon that will be positioned beneath the bridge.
The supports are difficult to access, which is why the works will take almost 24 hours. The works may cause some noise in the surrounding area. This may be a nuisance for local residents.
Why the reinforcement is necessary
From 17 July, the Papendrecht Bridge will be closed to all traffic for nine months. During this period, emergency and rescue services such as the fire brigade, ambulance and police will be able to use the cycle path on the Baanhoek Bridge. The cycle path will also be available for emergency doctors, operating teams from the hospital, midwives, emergency transport between hospitals and medical laboratories. For safety reasons, the cycle path will then be closed to regular traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use two ferry services that Rijkswaterstaat will deploy during the renovation.
The cycle path is connected to the existing railway bridge. An inspection of the existing structure has shown that it needs to be reinforced at three locations in order to be suitable for use by emergency and rescue services. This will be done on 21 March. The railway will then not be in use for other maintenance work. We are taking advantage of this closure of the railway for the repair work.
