Municipality of Steenbergen | Welcome lunchbox helps young schoolchildren eat healthily
Welcome lunchbox helps young schoolchildren eat healthily
The Municipality of Steenbergen is taking a new step to help children grow up healthier. Pupils in groups 1 and 2 at De Regenboog primary school were the first to receive the Welcome Lunchbox from Alderman Prent. The lunchbox is given to children when they start primary school.
Welcome gift for new primary school pupils
The Welcome Lunchbox is part of the preventive intervention 'I'm going to school and bringing this'. This is an initiative by Concept T and has been brought to the Municipality of Steenbergen in collaboration with our JOGG coordinator. It contains a lunchbox, a playful card fan with choice cards in four categories (base, spread, snack/snack and fruit), practical tips on portion size and the effect of nutrition on energy and concentration, a reward card ('I am a lunchbox hero') and a parent letter at B1 reading level with clear instructions.
Choosing a healthy lunch together
With the accompanying card fan, parents and children can make choices together for lunch; the child contributes within the choices indicated by the parent. Alderman Prent emphasises that this is exactly what makes the Welcome Lunchbox so valuable:
''It's good that children discover in a playful way what a healthy lunch is. Healthy food for children is important because it ensures they feel good, can play and explore. With the Welcome Lunchbox, all parents and carers in our municipality receive help in making healthy choices for their child.''
Contribution to local health ambitions
The Welcome Lunchbox aligns with the Municipality of Steenbergen's ambition as a JOGG municipality to promote a healthy lifestyle among children and young people aged 0 to 23. Healthy eating plays an important role in this, as childhood overweight is a point of attention both nationally and locally.
Thanks to the efforts of the JOGG coordinator (community sports coach), the Welcome Lunchbox can now also be used in the Municipality of Steenbergen, and the lunchboxes will be available at other primary schools from next week onwards.
