The Merwede city district in Utrecht receives 5 million euros in European subsidies for the development of an integrated energy system and smart solutions that prevent additional pressure on the overcrowded power grid. Merwede will become an innovative, car-free district with six thousand homes, largely self-sufficient in heat and where electricity is collectively generated. With the subsidy, Merwede can grow into a European model district in the field of energy innovation and sustainability.
Distribution and use of the subsidy
Utrecht receives the subsidy thanks to the innovative approach to alleviate the pressure on the full power grid (grid congestion) and the strong public-private partnership in Merwede. This has the potential to inspire and support other European cities in their approach. The amount is used for developing new technical solutions and for activities to help future residents use energy consciously.
The amount of 5 million euros is distributed among various partners who realize the innovation, including Stedin, Mobiliteitsbedrijf Merwede, WKO B.V., Essent, Bo-Ex, Woonin, Portaal, TU Delft, Hogeschool Utrecht, and Stichting KlimaatGesprekken. The Municipality of Utrecht receives 1.7 million euros. The rest is distributed among the other involved parties.
Example for the Netherlands and Europe
The results of the pilot in Merwede are also used to address grid congestion in the rest of the municipality and region. Among other things, practical tools are developed and feasibility studies are conducted for the use of group contracts in grid congestion projects in Utrecht.
