Letter from the scout to the residents of the municipality of Utrecht
Dear residents, On Wednesday, 18 March, you elected your new municipal council. You can find the election results here.
The new municipal council is now starting a new four-year term of office. This term begins with a scouting phase. During this phase, the political parties elected to the municipal council will explore how they wish to govern Utrecht over the next four years and which form of political cooperation would be most suitable.
My name is Lilianne Ploumen, and today your municipal council has nominated me as its scout. I consider this an honour. I look forward to getting to know the elected factions, hearing their ideas, and exploring which form of cooperation would be most appropriate for your municipality over the next four years. Sixteen factions, both large and small, have been elected to the new municipal council, and together they represent your voice. I believe it is important to listen carefully to the input from all factions, including those in the minority. The discussions during this scouting phase will lead to my advice to the municipal council on the possible political cooperation arrangements that could be used to govern your city over the coming years. I have great confidence in the goodwill of the factions to work together in a way that does justice to the choice you, as residents, have made.
At this stage, the political parties are not yet discussing the content of their plans for the next four years. That will happen in the next phase, known as the formation phase. If you would like to share anything with me, you can reach me via email.
I want to keep you well informed about the steps being taken, because it is your voice and your city. Once I have spoken to all the parties, I will write a report of my findings. This report will also include my advice on what I consider to be the most suitable form of political cooperation given the election results. This report will be made public and you will be able to read it on the municipality’s website. I will also present this report to the municipal council during a public council meeting.
I look forward to getting to work!
Kind regards, Lilianne Ploumen
