Festive opening of the renovated Kampweg
The Kampweg on Vlieland has been renovated! The Kampweg is the road that runs from the Wad to the east of the village, through the forest, past the Stortemelk and Duinkersoord campsites, heading west to the bus loop at the Ankerplaats. The grey asphalt has been replaced with red and yellow baked bricks, and the road has been widened. On Thursday, March 26, the road will be officially opened in a festive ceremony by Mayor Michiel Schrier and Alderman Tom van Mourik. All residents and guests are welcome, and for invited guests arriving by ferry, there will be a special program upon arrival.
Program
On Thursday, March 26 at 1:15 PM, the Kampweg will be officially opened at the beginning of the road, at the intersection with Havenweg, by Mayor Michiel Schrier and Alderman Tom van Mourik. After this, invited guests and other interested parties will cycle along the Kampweg to the other end of the road. At the bus loop near the Ankerplaats, cake and (non-alcoholic) drinks will be available for everyone, and a toast will be made to celebrate the successful completion of the project. The schoolchildren of Vlieland will also join in the festivities. They too will cycle along the Kampweg, but will make a stop along the way near the football field. There, they will receive a practical lesson from Veilig Verkeer Nederland (Dutch Road Safety) about the blind spot of trucks, a topic they will have covered in a theory lesson earlier that morning. After this, they will continue to the end of the Kampweg, where cake and lemonade will also be waiting for them. The program will conclude at 2:30 PM.
Implementation of the Kampweg reconstruction
Since October 1, 2025, contractor Nota Infra from Sneek has been working on the reconstruction of the Kampweg, which no longer met modern safety standards. The new road has been paved "in the style of Vlieland," with a central carriageway of red bricks and cycling and walking paths along the edges made of yellow bricks. The road has been widened by one meter, and all intersections have been raised or appear raised due to the paving method. This makes them more noticeable, enhancing safety for all road users. The project was completed ahead of the planned date of April 1; by early March, the road was already accessible to all traffic.
Subsidies from the province and the central government
The reconstruction of the Kampweg was made possible in part by subsidies from the Province of Fryslân and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
The Province of Fryslân provided a grant of €30,306 under the Temporary Impulse Scheme for Climate Adaptation 2021–2027 for measures to combat waterlogging at the sports field. Description of the subsidized activities: Excess water is drained in three stages:
- infiltration into a low-lying area in the nearby forest
- drainage via a pressure pipeline to more distant dry ditches
- drainage to the Wadden Sea when the previous stages have reached their maximum capacity.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management granted two specific allocations under the Regulation for Specific Allocations to Stimulate Traffic Safety Measures 2022–2023 and 2025–2030:
- An allocation of €27,107.44 for traffic safety measures, specifically the construction of intersection platforms on 60 km/h roads
- An allocation of €105,453.99 for traffic safety measures, including the relocation of streetlights, widening of cycle paths, installation of paved verges along cycle paths, construction of a single cycle lane with cycle lanes and verges, and installation of paved verges (grass concrete tiles) on 60 km/h roads (expanded on both sides).
