Talking about suicide can save lives
Talking about suicide is difficult for many people. Yet it is precisely that conversation that can make all the difference. That is why GGD Noord- en Oost-Gelderland and municipalities in the region are launching the "Talking can save lives" campaign. With this awareness campaign, we encourage residents to talk about their concerns sooner—whether about themselves or someone close to them. Because that conversation—no matter how difficult—can make all the difference.
How is it really going?
The campaign begins with a video by Gerrit from Lochem. Ten years ago, he was at a difficult point in his life. Thanks to timely help, he found the strength to carry on. By openly sharing his story now, he is helping to break the taboo surrounding suicide. His message: dare to ask how things really are, listen, and seek help if you need it.
Project leader Martine Peppelenbos of GGD Noord- en Oost-Gelderland: “A persistent assumption is that talking about suicide might put someone in mind of it. That is not true. Talking reduces loneliness and actually lifts the burden. I hope this campaign encourages our residents to also ask about possible thoughts of suicide when concerned about someone. By giving space to the other person’s story, you can make a real difference, especially when someone is struggling with life.”
Why talking sooner can help
Personal stories show us that discussing suicidal thoughts in time can help prevent serious situations. The campaign aims to break the taboo and support residents in having this conversation sooner and with more confidence. Many people feel they need to come up with a solution immediately. That is not necessary. You don’t have to solve the problem. In the coming months, the campaign will illustrate this with relatable situations, personal stories, and practical tips.
Part of Samen Minder Suïcide
The "Talking can save lives" campaign is part of the regional approach Samen Minder Suïcide, in which GGD Noord- en Oost-Gelderland works with municipalities and social partners to prevent suicide. Within this approach, the focus is on raising awareness, recognizing signals in time, and guiding people toward appropriate help and support.
