Safe on the water: lock lessons at De Spieghel start again
With the opening on April 1 of lock De Spieghel, the popular waterway between Wolderwijd and the polder is open again. We are also organizing free lock lessons this year to prepare recreational boaters well to go on the water.
Safely and confidently through lock De Spieghel
The lock has a height difference of no less than 5.20 meters. This is impressive and not self-evident for everyone. Passing through the lock requires some preparation. ‘We want everyone, from beginner to experienced boater, to go on the water relaxed and safely’, according to alderman Steven Scheffer.
Theory on dry land, practice in the boat
The lessons are given by lock keeper Paul Rimmelzwaan and consist of a theory and practice part. During the theory lesson on the quay, the lock keeper explains the technique of the lock. Topics such as safety, communication, and the correct way of mooring are extensively discussed. During the practical lesson, participants can sail through the lock with their own boat under the guidance of the lock master. Both directions are practiced: from low to high to Wolderwijd and vice versa.
When can you participate?
The theory lessons last approximately one and a half hours and take place on Saturday, April 18 and Saturday, April 25, starting at 10:30 AM or 1:30 PM. There is room for a maximum of 12 participants for each theory lesson (full=full).
The practical lesson takes place on Saturday, May 16 between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Register for the lock lesson
You can register by sending an email to lock keeper Paul Rimmelzwaan via. Mention in the email if you want to participate in the theory and practical lesson. You can only participate in the practical lesson if you have also followed the theory lesson. Provide your name, phone number, the number of people, and your preferred date in the email. After registration, the lock keeper will contact you and you will receive confirmation of the day and time.
