Man from Tiel jailed for cybercrime
Also guilty of WhatsApp fraud, money laundering and public violence
The court has sentenced a 21-year-old man from Tiel to an 18-month prison sentence, six months of which are suspended. The man has been found guilty of multiple fraud cases involving cybercrime. He was also found guilty of WhatsApp fraud, money laundering, public violence, theft with violence, resisting arrest, failing to comply with a given order and driving without a licence.
On 14 January 2023, the man participated in a group fight in a public square in Tiel. During this incident, he injured several victims. He then used violence to steal a watch from one of the victims. In addition, the man was involved in multiple fraud cases. Details of various business accounts at a mail-order company were altered, allowing him to order expensive phones. He intercepted some of these orders before they could be delivered to the intended addresses. Once he had the phones in his possession, he sold them on.
He also defrauded a woman via WhatsApp together with an accomplice and laundered the stolen money. Finally, the man from Tiel was driving without a licence. When police officers attempted to arrest him, he resisted and refused to hand over the car keys to the officer after being ordered to do so.
Statements deemed unreliable
The court does not believe the man’s statement that he only collected one package because someone asked him to. The evidence clearly shows that he did this multiple times and had already done so in October 2022. He was aware that names and delivery addresses had been falsified. In fact, he even used one of the phones from a fraudulent order himself. The court also does not believe his claim that he did not steal the watch. The owner identified him, and several police officers recognised him in the CCTV footage.
Sentence
The court has imposed a shorter sentence than the 21 months demanded by the Public Prosecution Service. This is because the man has been acquitted of two fraud cases, meaning he laundered less money than initially suspected. The court also took into account the excessive length of the proceedings. Part of the sentence has therefore been suspended.
The court has sentenced the man to an 18-month prison term, six months of which are suspended. The suspended portion comes with a probation period of three years.
Compensation
Finally, the man must pay various compensation amounts, totalling nearly €4,500. The total damage was much higher, but not all parties claimed compensation.
