Major traffic disruption in the Utrecht region; April - October 2026
Published on: 12 March 2026, 3:59 PM
Road users in and around Utrecht will face significant traffic disruption this year. Between April and October 2026, Rijkswaterstaat will carry out extensive roadworks on the motorways in the region.
A total of 20 weekends and 15 weeks of roadworks are currently planned. This could lead to delays of up to 60 minutes or more. Make sure you are well prepared before setting off. Plan your journey via vanAnaarBeter.
Extensive maintenance work
In the coming years, we will be tackling a substantial maintenance backlog. Many roads, bridges and viaducts from the 1950s and 1960s are in need of replacement or renovation due to intensive use.
To keep our roads safe and reliable, we are therefore carrying out a lot of work simultaneously. This means that many roadworks are planned across the Netherlands, and it is sometimes unavoidable that work will be carried out in multiple locations at the same time. This year, we are also conducting extensive maintenance work in the Utrecht region.
Roadworks in the Utrecht region
In 2026, we will be working on the A2 motorway towards Utrecht between junction Everdingen and junction Oudenrijn. Work will begin on Friday evening, 3 April, and will continue for six consecutive weekends. There will also be work at junction Oudenrijn: the slip road from the A12 from The Hague to the A2 towards ’s-Hertogenbosch will be widened and will therefore be closed for two weekends in July.
In addition, the A12 motorway between junction Lunetten and Veenendaal will undergo major maintenance, spread over periods in June and August/September. The road towards Veenendaal will be closed for seven weekends. During three weeks, work will also be carried out on weekdays; there will then be fewer lanes available and a lower speed limit.
Finally, we will be working on the A2 motorway between junction Everdingen and junction Deil. For six weeks in September/October, only three instead of four lanes will be open in both directions, with a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h.
National roadworks affecting the Utrecht region
The roadworks around Utrecht are part of major maintenance work being carried out across the country and sometimes also affect the Utrecht region. For example, we are working on the A12 motorway between The Hague and Gouda, the A30 motorway between Barneveld and Lunteren and the A27 motorway between Houten and Hooipolder.
You can find an overview of all roadworks in and around Utrecht on the page Roadworks in and around Utrecht.
Advice for road users
Unfortunately, carrying out so much maintenance work cannot be done without disruption and inconvenience. Therefore, plan your journey carefully. Check vanAnaarBeter for up-to-date information before you set off.
We advise you not to travel by car during the roadworks unless absolutely necessary and to work from home if possible. If you must travel, consider alternative options such as public transport or cycling. If you do have to travel by car, avoid peak hours. Follow the official diversion route. Together, we can keep the region accessible.
