Nieuwegein's historic Emmabrug replacement delayed until late 2027
Residents and businesses in Nieuwegein face prolonged disruptions as the replacement of the unsafe Emmabrug is pushed to late 2027. A temporary solution was deemed unfeasible, forcing traffic rerouting and limited access for inland vessels until the new bridge is built.

No Emmabrug in Nieuwegein; replacement not before late 2027
Published on: March 23, 2026, 1:07 PM
Rijkswaterstaat is constructing a completely new bridge to replace the removed Emmabrug in Vreeswijk, Nieuwegein. The new bridge is expected to be completed, at the earliest, by the end of 2027. A temporary bridge is not feasible. Until the replacement is completed, we will redirect traffic.
Replacement for safety
Research showed that the Emmabrug was not strong enough to be safely used. That is why we removed the bridge. Now, a completely new bridge must be built. This will take considerable time due to research, permits, design, and construction.
When developing the new plans, we are taking into account that the Emmabrug is a listed monument. To this end, we are collaborating with the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed and the Commissie Omgevingskwaliteit Nieuwegein.
Temporary bridge not feasible
Currently, there is a non-movable temporary bridge in place where the Emmabrug used to be. This bridge is too low for inland vessels wishing to sail up the Merwedekanaal. As a result, entrepreneurs along the water and mooring spots behind the Koninginnensluis are not safely accessible. Since we also need to complete work on the lock, this bridge will be removed on May 1, 2026.
Other options for a temporary bridge were also explored. Unfortunately, these proved unfeasible, primarily due to safety and cost concerns.
Detour route
Until the new Emmabrug is completed, we will ensure that shops and hospitality venues remain easily accessible via a detour route via the Wilhelminabrug, Dorpsstraat, and Irenestraat.
