For three regions – South, Nabatiye, and Baalbek-Hermel – there is still violence related to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, the available information shows that this involves a relatively low level of random violence, mostly aimed at military targets such as Hezbollah positions.
“This means that people from these areas do not automatically qualify for protection,” said Van Weel. “As with all asylum applications, the IND assesses on a case-by-case basis whether there is a real risk. Only those who can demonstrate that they are individually at risk qualify for protection.”
In the rest of Lebanon, there is no random violence due to armed conflict. Applications there are also assessed individually, based on the personal situation of the applicant.
With the lifting of the moratorium, clarity is provided for asylum seekers whose applications were previously on hold. At the same time, it helps reduce the pressure on reception capacity, as the asylum chain is set in motion again.
