Wars, the growing hybrid threat, and sabotage in the Baltic Sea are increasingly putting European security under pressure. According to Eichelsheim, this is the moment for Europe to stand strong.
“We must show that we are willing to fight for freedom and peace,” he explained. “And we must ensure that our armed forces are fully equipped, with sufficient personnel, equipment, ammunition, and supplies. As our king noted when he recently visited the Dutch troops: we must ensure that they are ‘armed to the teeth.’”
Examples of Cooperation
European countries need to cooperate better in the field of defense, the general emphasized. One example is Defport, a new platform for collaboration between Defense, research institutions, and industry. Another example is SeaSEC, which ensures safety on the seabed. The Netherlands is also collaborating with other European countries in the field of space. “This year and next, the Netherlands will launch multiple satellites in cooperation with the Dutch industry and international partners,” Eichelsheim said.
For him, cooperation with the industry is not just about capabilities like battle tanks, ships, or aircraft. “We also need to realize innovative solutions, such as drones. They can be purchased quickly, for less money, and in huge numbers.” Kubilius agrees and wonders if Europe is ready to face the Russians, should they attack NATO. “While Europe knows that Putins troops have millions of drones on hand,” he adds.
Peace in Ukraine is Peace in Europe
Kubilius: “Peace in Ukraine is peace in Europe. We must work on that ourselves. European countries need to spend 3.5% of GDP on defense. But they must also support Ukraine. The Netherlands and the Dutch defense industry understand that.”
“The eastern border of Europe is our border,” emphasizes Eichelsheim. “Your freedom is our mission. We will continue to commit to that cause. As the EU, but also as NATO. Because peace must not become a utopia for the next generation.”
The conference is an important step towards the NATO summit on June 24 and 25. There, it will be discussed how Europe and its allies can stand stronger together in an uncertain world.
