This Schiermonnikoog route is the only route that can be constructed on time and with sufficient certainty. The chosen route will be constructed using proven techniques, such as the use of a Wadtrencher - a special vehicle with minimal impact on nature - and guided drilling on land, instead of open excavations. This minimizes damage to nature and agricultural land as much as possible. The other investigated eastern routes turned out to be too complex and unfeasible for now.
Minister Hermans, Climate and Green Growth: “The choice of the Schiermonnikoog route is an important decision to continue making progress with energy security for the region and especially for the industry in the Eemshaven. We have weighed all interests as best as possible. I made this choice based on years of research and assessed on feasibility, ecological impact, and planning. I have had many discussions with the region over the past year and will continue to do so, among other things about investments in the region. There was a need for clarity, and it is good that it is now there.”
After the publication of the decision, TenneT will start the project procedure. During this procedure, the Schiermonnikoog Wantij route will be detailed and developed in consultation with the region.
As part of the package, significant investments will be made in the region with area investments of €124 million to enhance the livability in the area. The region will determine where these additional resources can best be utilized, particularly in terms of sustainability and agriculture.
The decision will be published next week in the Staatscourant and on the RVO website.
