Sufficient new construction plans for 100,000 homes per year
Municipalities have sufficient new construction plans in the pipeline to build 100,000 homes per year. This is stated by Minister Boekholt-O’Sullivan in a letter to the House of Representatives.
This number is necessary to meet the growing demand for suitable and affordable housing. For the period from 2025 to 2030, municipalities have nearly one million (932,300) plans in the pipeline. This is significantly more (+128%) than the construction task agreed upon in 2022 with the provinces and necessary, as in practice not all construction plans are actually realized according to schedule.
For around 440,000 homes, municipal councils have already given the green light. The key is that more projects receive the green light and are granted permits so that construction can begin.
Minister Boekholt-O’Sullivan (Housing and Spatial Planning): “It’s great that municipalities are on track. I’m very pleased with that. At the same time, we will need to continue pushing to accelerate housing construction. Of course, it’s crucial that the preconditions, such as nitrogen and electricity, are in order. But at the end of the day, as we say in Brabant, ‘nie mauwe, maar bouwe’ [not whining, but building]. This can only be achieved together: together with municipalities, provinces, construction and investment parties, and my colleagues in the cabinet. Full steam ahead together.”
To support governments, housing corporations, and market parties in realizing new construction, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has, for the first time, made all public new construction plans visible with the National Housing Construction Map. The data is based on the National Monitor for Housing Construction Progress (as of July 2025) and is updated every six months. The map shows, per region and municipality, how many homes are planned, what types of homes, in which price categories, and what their status is.
