Cabinet decides to deploy HNLMS Evertsen in the Mediterranean Sea
The air defence and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen will be deployed this week until early April in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The frigate will contribute to the defence of the Carrier Strike Group, the defence of Cyprus, and allied territory. This is announced today by ministers Tom Berendsen (Foreign Affairs) and Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius (Defence) to the House of Representatives.
Minister Berendsen: “With this deployment, the Netherlands demonstrates allied solidarity and contributes to European cooperation in protecting the international rules-based order.”
Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius: “HNLMS Evertsen has unique capabilities to detect air threats from a great distance. This enables the crew to protect themselves and allies. By operating alongside the French, we also strengthen our actions within a European framework.”
This is a defensive deployment in response to recent developments in the Middle East and Iran’s attacks on neighbouring countries, including several of the Netherlands’ partners. In doing so, the Netherlands contributes to European cooperation to protect the international rules-based order. It also demonstrates the Netherlands’ solidarity with its European partners.
Part of a fleet formation
The air defence and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen has been part of the fleet formation with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle since 4 February. Last week, France requested the Netherlands to continue supporting the fleet formation. The sensors and weapon systems of HNLMS Evertsen are well-suited for defending a fleet formation against the threat of drones and missiles.
