4 years of war: “Ukraine can continue to count on us!”
Today marks four years since Russia launched its large-scale attack on Ukraine. That is why the Ukrainian flag is flying at the Ministry of Defence in The Hague. The yellow-and-blue flag is also displayed at other government buildings, showing that the Netherlands stands firmly behind Ukraine. Our country has already provided nearly €12 billion in military aid.
Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius: “Just under three hours’ flight away, the largest war on our continent since the Second World War has been raging for four years. For 1,461 days, the determined and courageous Ukrainians have been defending themselves against Russia’s relentless war machine. They are doing this for our freedom and security as well. Despite diplomatic talks, Russia is only intensifying its attacks. We will not leave the Ukrainians out in the cold. They can continue to count on us.”
F-16s
The Netherlands is one of Europe’s leading providers of military support to Ukraine. In 2025, our assistance was stepped up even further. Last year, our country delivered €5.4 billion worth of military equipment, including ammunition, air defence systems and hundreds of thousands of drones.
The aid also included training to operate and maintain F-16 fighter jets. The former Dutch aircraft play a key role in defending Ukraine’s airspace.
In addition, Dutch military personnel have trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops alongside allies, including crews for tanks and minesweepers.
Industry
The Netherlands and Ukraine are also increasingly working together in the defence industry. To this end, both countries signed an agreement at the end of last year. Ukrainian-developed defence systems (with frontline expertise) can now be produced in the Netherlands. This increases the security of supply to Ukraine, particularly of drones, and also gives a boost to the Dutch defence industry and potential deliveries to the armed forces.
