More funding for regions with offshore wind farm connections
News item | 03-18-2026 | 09:00
The Dutch cabinet is allocating additional funds for investments in the liveability of regions where power from offshore wind farms comes ashore. This time, a total of €245 million is available for the five regions. This is part of the area investment package from the Climate Fund and the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Each region will determine how the investments are used to improve the well-being of residents. A number of projects are already visible that were realised with funding from the first round in 2024.
The connection of offshore wind farms to the grid has an impact on land due to the construction of the necessary infrastructure. For this reason, the Dutch government is working with other authorities to invest in the quality of life in the five regions. Each region has drawn up a plan with concrete projects for this purpose.
The projects fall under one of the following themes:
- preserving and strengthening nature;
- improving the physical living environment;
- strengthening the regional economy;
- accelerating the energy transition.
A future with sustainable energy
The Netherlands is in the midst of a transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. Ultimately, the Netherlands aims to be climate-neutral by 2050. Thanks to the country’s favourable location, it is possible to generate a great deal of sustainable energy in the North Sea. This will make the North Sea the driving force behind our future energy system. The energy generated by the wind farms in the North Sea will be transported to the Netherlands.
The connection to the electricity grid is made via cables. Offshore wind farms require locations where these connections between sea and land can be established. This is happening in Northern Netherlands (Eemshaven), Zeeland (Borsele), Rotterdam (Maasvlakte), the North Sea Canal area and around Moerdijk and Geertruidenberg.
With these area investments, the Dutch government, together with the regions, aims to strengthen the living environment in these locations. This will make the Netherlands more prosperous, cleaner and less dependent on other countries.
