Get free compost on National Compost Day
On Saturday, March 28, it will be National Compost Day. Residents of twelve municipalities in the Meerlanden region will be able to collect free compost in their own town or municipality.
With this initiative, Meerlanden and the municipalities are thanking residents for properly separating their GFT waste. GFT stands for vegetable, fruit, and garden waste, as well as food scraps. This is processed at the Green Energy Factory, where six different products are made, including compost.
Collect your own compost
For the third year in a row, residents can come and collect their own compost. Previously, compost was distributed in plastic bags, but since last year, visitors have been bringing their own buckets, bags, or trays. This is more sustainable and fosters a sense of community. Visitors help each other scoop the compost and engage in conversation.
Meerlanden will provide enough scoops. Everyone can collect compost as long as supplies last: first come, first served.

Good for gardens and soil
By properly separating GFT waste, residents are literally creating something beautiful themselves. Clean GFT waste can be turned into high-quality compost. Compost is a natural soil improver. It helps flowers and plants grow better in an environmentally friendly way and keeps the soil healthy. It also helps retain water in the ground. Thus, a healthy soil starts with separating waste in your own kitchen and garden.
About National Compost Day
Meerlanden began distributing free compost in 2005. Since 2007, it has been a national event, initiated by the Waste Management Association, in collaboration with GFT composters and the Dutch Association for Organic Residuals (BVOR).
